Do you often share your food with your dog? We found a way to do it guilt-free and make a dog-friendly version of several meals. Let’s start with our homemade veggie patty recipe for you and your dog to enjoy together.
We often find ourselves doomed, not knowing what to make for lunch. Especially for those days I came up with the following recipe which is quite simple to make, besides not only is it fulfilling and flavorful, but also surprisingly low-calorie while still rich in fibers thanks to the veggie and oat base.
These patties serve perfectly as a light snack, I usually side them with a greek yogurt based dip, infused with lots of green herbs and a pinch of lemon – I leave it out of Pockety’s batch. If you’d like to make a more fulfilling meal out of it, then you can also add some fresh, crispy veggies and make a burger – or more.
Why alter the recipe for your dog?
It’s important to note, that this meal does not replace a dog’s usual protein and fiber rich food, but it’s a great snack to share with them besides their nutritious daily meal. The reason we came up with a completely doggy-friendly version is because we always found joy in sharing a bite or two with Pockety, who never in his life has said no to such offerings. He does require some encouragement when spitting out a fine piece of apple that’s no longer covered in peanut butter, but that’s a story for another day.
The point is, because of his sensitive stomach and digestive system, we often found ourselves guilty for sneaking a little treat for him that caused him to bloat and suffer from discomfort due to that, too. So with small modifications here and there, we often make him just one or two pieces that he can enjoy with us, these veggie patties are one of those.
I hope you enjoy them!

The recipe base (8 patties)
- 1 whole, medium sized zucchini, peeled, grated
- 1 carrot, peeled, grated
- 1 medium potato, peeled, grated
- ½ onion, finely diced
- 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- ⅓ cup (2 oz or 50g) cheese of choice, grated (I used edam, but it can also be parmesan, trapist or any other cheese)
- 1 medium sized egg
- ⅔ cup (4 oz or 100g) oats
- salt to taste
- pepper to taste
- nutmeg to taste
- parsley (fresh or dried) to taste
- 5 tbsp oil for frying/2 tbsp for baking or air frying (approx. 80 kcal)
Preparation:
1. First we peel all the vegetables, grate the zucchini, carrot and potato. Next add the salt, then mix it all up in a bowl. Wait around 5 minutes, then press the liquid out of the mixture – either by hand or I like to use a strainer. It’s a necessary step to eliminate excessive moisture from our patties.
2. Next we add the cheese and egg, mix it well, then start adding our oats bit by bit. It’s ideal to add it in portions (I like to divide it into two batches), because it depends on the leftover liquids in our mass how much oats we actually need to soak it up and help it stick together. Our consistency should be moist, sticky, but firm enough to stay in shape.
3. When it’s done and all mixed, we can take a handful out of the mixture for our doggy – who’s at this point probably impatiently poking us or just practices puppy eyes, which quite frankly is terribly unfair towards us. They know we can’t resist it…
Next up we’re going separate directions with our ‘human’ and ‘doggy’ batches:
4.1. Human batch
First dice the onion and very finely chop up the garlic, then add the spices and mix up thoroughly again.
4.2. Doggy batch
Add a pinch of ginger, parsley and optionally cumin. Mix it all together.
5. Next up, take around a handful of the mixture and form a ball out of it to make sure air is mostly gone from the inside. Then flatten it out and go ahead with the baking/frying process. I usually make it around a finger’s worth in thickness, that perfectly cooks through but won’t dry out during the frying process.
6. Finally, fry the patties in around 5 tbsp of oil at a medium heat, flip halftime, or put them in the air fryer or oven at 392 °F 200 °C until crispy and brown on the outside. If you’re baking them in an air fryer or the oven, make sure to use some cooking spray before doing so. Frying in a pan takes around 10 minutes, oven and air fryer might be longer.
Dog-friendly veggie patty – for a snack (4 patties)
If we’d just like to make a batch for our furry friends, we can start by the following portions. It’ll make enough for 3-4 patties. Please, remember to always check the daily recommended intake for your dog, depending on breed, size, age, and even level of activity.
- 1 whole small zucchini, peeled, grated
- 1 small carrot, peeled, grated
- 1 potato, peeled, grated
- ⅛ cup (0.9 oz or 25g) cheese of choice, grated (can be parmesan, trapist, edamer etc.)
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup (1.8 oz or 50g) oats
- small pinch of ginger (as a pepper substitution)
- parsley (fresh or dried)
Preparation is the same as above, although I definitely recommend baking it in the oven or an air fryer, with minimal to no oil used in the process.
Enjoy! We sure did, here’s some proof:
